About Us
Coverage and Care for All San Diegans
San Diegans for Healthcare Coverage (SDHCC) was founded in 2001 with a mission of improving the health of our community by improving access to health care through the expansion of healthcare coverage to all San Diegans. An initiative, first begun by the County of San Diego to focus on expanding healthcare coverage in the region and stymied by State budget and bureaucracy, has grown over the years into this diverse coalition of community members committed to a common goal.
We believe forging a strong voice on Health Reform is a crucial step toward a workable solution to our country’s health care crisis. While Health Reform plans and legislative initiatives are being developed and deliberated at all levels of government, we know that health care is a local issue. We need good Federal policy, but it cannot be achieved without local input.
Meaningful health reform and health coverage are essential to improving the health of our communities. And while government debates rage, we must be proactive in influencing those conversations and in building a framework for responding to Health Reform proposals.
Who We Are
SDHCC stands apart as a coalition. With a diverse partnership that includes business, physician, hospital and other healthcare leaders, consumer advocates and consumers, academia, faith-based organizations, labor, and other community organizations, the coalition is committed to non-partisan and inclusive collaboration that bridges the divide and builds consensus toward real change. Our premise is that we are better off working together to find common ground than allowing our differences to divide and defeat us.
What We Do
The number of people in the United States facing inadequate coverage and care continues to grow, and the problems of the uninsured and underinsured affect us all. A less productive and less healthy community and an increasing number of Americans who do not get the care they need are problems we all need to care about. Whether it’s higher premiums and higher taxes to fund public coverage and the ravages of foregone care, or fewer Emergency Departments and longer wait times for care, it’s a problem we cannot continue to ignore. This crisis is undeniable -- we must pursue a vision for health so compelling that we must achieve it.
San Diegans for Healthcare Coverage has and continues to work to pursue health reform and coverage through:
- Education. Telling the story of how lack of access and affordable coverage affects families and businesses in our community. Learning from the experts about what options and key decisions must be made. Building a community understanding about why meaningful Health Reform must be achieved.
- Building Consensus. Convening leaders and community members to identify critical issues, make trade-offs and achieve consensus allows us to bridge the divide, not just shoot across it. Through our efforts over the years we have continued to build and strengthen consensus positions, as well as our coalition and network.
- Advocacy. Being informed and ready to act…and then stepping up to advocate for our shared principles sets our community apart as a leader in using a local initiative to address a national issue. Through our coalition member organizations and our network, SDHCC works to promote meaningful health reform and coverage.
